Cave Creek and Carefree are located in Maricopa County.  In the 2004 census, the population of Carefree was reported at about 3300, and Cave Creek roughly at 4400.  The natural scenery in both communities is spectacular.

Black Mountain:
Driving north on either Scottsdale Road or Cave Creek Road, from the Phoenix Valley, you can see the Black Mountain.  It rises tall and irresistible and viewable softly in the distance. It is like no other mountain around. Black Mountain is the center of the Foothills and it is partially surrounded by the huge famous Boulders.  The mountain peaks at about 1,300 feet and is made of yellow granite.  The Black Mountain provides some of the most prime real estate in Cave Creek and Carefree.  The views are incredible.

The Climate (rain, wind and yes, even snow!):
Cave Creek and Carefree residents generally believe the area's climate to be one of the best on the planet.  The climate is both cooler and wetter than Phoenix or Scottsdale, because the Foothills are surrounded by the mountains and the elevation is about 1,000 feet higher.  Residents enjoy 8-10 degree cooler days and a greater temperature at night than Phoenix or Scottsdale.  Cave Creek and Carefree have less buildings, paved roads, parking lots and smog, therefore less heat retention.  The elevation of Carefree and Cave Creek and New River ranges from 2,000 to 2,600 feet above mean sea level.  The average temperatures in Cave Creek and Carefree are:
+ January:  52 degrees F
+ April:  65 degrees F
+ July:  86 degrees F
+ October:  71 degrees F
The higher elevation, combined with nearby mountains, gives Cave Creek and Carefree a better chance in getting more rainfall compared to Phoenix or Scottsdale.  Average annual precipitation totals more than 16 inches, which is about twice as much as Phoenix area.  The highest Carefree and Cave Creek temperature was recorded in June of 1990 at about 117 degrees F.  December seems to be the wettest month for Carefree and Cave Creek, and August is the second highest.  About once every three years Cave Creek and Carefree residence experience some snow fall as well.  The snow does not usually last more than a day or two, however the surrounding mountains may keep their snowy powder for several days.
