Cave Creek and Carefree are located in Maricopa County.
In the 2004 census, the population of Carefree was
reported at about 3300, and Cave Creek roughly at 4400.
The natural scenery in both communities is spectacular.
Black Mountain: Driving north on either Scottsdale Road or Cave Creek
Road, from the Phoenix Valley, you can see the Black
Mountain. It rises tall and irresistible and
viewable softly in the
distance. It is like no
other mountain around. Black Mountain is the center of
the Foothills and it is partially surrounded by the huge
famous Boulders. The
mountain peaks at about 1,300 feet and is made of yellow
granite. The Black Mountain provides some
of the most prime real estate in Cave Creek and
Carefree. The views are incredible.
The Climate (rain, wind and yes, even snow!): Cave Creek and Carefree residents generally believe the
area's climate to be one of the best on the planet.
The climate is both cooler and wetter than Phoenix or
Scottsdale, because the Foothills are surrounded by the
mountains and the elevation is about 1,000 feet higher.
Residents enjoy 8-10 degree cooler days and a greater
temperature at night than Phoenix or Scottsdale.
Cave Creek and Carefree have less buildings, paved
roads, parking lots and smog, therefore less heat
retention. The elevation of Carefree and Cave
Creek and New River ranges from 2,000 to 2,600 feet
above mean sea level. The average temperatures in
Cave Creek and Carefree are: + January: 52 degrees F + April: 65 degrees F + July: 86 degrees F + October: 71 degrees F
The higher elevation, combined with nearby mountains,
gives Cave Creek and Carefree a better chance in getting
more rainfall compared to Phoenix or Scottsdale.
Average annual precipitation totals more than 16 inches,
which is about twice as much as Phoenix area. The
highest Carefree and Cave Creek temperature was recorded
in June of 1990 at about 117 degrees F. December
seems to be the wettest month for Carefree and Cave
Creek, and August is the second highest. About
once every three years Cave Creek and Carefree residence
experience some snow fall as well. The snow does
not usually last more than a day or two, however the
surrounding mountains may keep their snowy powder for
several days. |
